Making Thicker Yogurt


It is easy to making thicker yogurt at home.

Lots of people like thicker yogurt, because it is more tasty and creamy than thin yogurt.

But most of store bought yogurt has been add food additives, so they looked thicker and creamier, but the taste is not as good as your homemade yogurt. Sometimes it's even not taste like yogurt.

In this page I will show you how to making thicker yogurt at home in just few steps.

What do you need:



  • 2 Quart glass batter bowl can hold 8 cups milk. (clean and dry before use)

  • One cooking thermometer.

  • 8 cups milk (whole milk, 1% reduced fat milk, 2% reduced fat milk; the whole milk works better).

  • 1 cup nonfat dry milk.

  • 3/4 cup plain yogurt saved from your last batch, or any brands of plain yogurt that must have active cultures (this is the yogurt starter).

  • A bowl and a spoon (used to mix plain yogurt and milk).

    Try this Bulgarian yogurt starter, it will make a rich and creamy homemade yogurt.

    Let start to making thicker yogurt:



    1. Pour 8 cups of milk into the 2-quart glass bowl;

    3. Place the milk into microwave, then cook the milk for about 16 minutes or until the milk temperature reaches 180°F (about 83°C)

      Cook time depents your microwave's power, try few times and you will know how yours work.

    5. Place the cooked milk on the counter to cool down in room temperature (may take about 2 hours), cover the lid but not tied it.


    6. Or place the glass bowl into a basin with cool water in it (the water should not be over the milk), this will short the cool time to 15-20 minutes.

    7. Check the milk tempreture is drop down between 110°F-120°F (about 43°C-48°C), preferably about 115°F (about 46°C).


    8. At the same time to cool your milk, you can take 3/4 cup of plain yogurt and put aside for about 20-30 minutes before you use it.

    10. Turn on your oven to preheat 200°F (about 93°C), then turn off oven after it reach the certain temperature; or if you are making yogurt after your baking, check your oven temperature is about 200°F (about 93°C)

    12. Spoon in some warm milk from the glass bowl and mix well.

    14. Pour in yogurt starter mixture and stir.

    16. Cover a lid on the glass bowl but not tied it, then move it into oven and close the door.

    18. It will take about 8-12 hours, your yogurt will be done.

    20. You will see that the yogurt will have some liquid on it, this is normal, and this liquid is called "whey", I like to keep it in the yogurt. Or you can drain it if you want to.


    21. Keep about 3/4 cup into a clean container with a lid tie on, and you can keep it in the refrigerator for up to a week so you can use it for the next time batch.


    22. Chill the yogurt into refrigerate about 4-6 hours, you will a nice and creamy thicker plain yogurt.
