Cheese Cloth Straining Yogurt

Cheese cloth straining yogurt is a good idea for big amount of straining homemade plain yogurt (over 4 cups), use Cheese Cloth plus kitchen 8" strainer or colander will works great.


You will need:


  • Cheese cloth (about 4 layers)
  • Container to catch the whey
  • Plastic wrap to cover the yogurt
  • Plastic bag (no zipper) with some water in and tied it to give some weight to accelerate the processing time
Let's see how-to use cheese cloth to strain yogurt:

  1. Fold the cheese cloth into 4 layers about 18" x 18", soak it into boiled water for about two minutes


  2. Pour out the water, and let the cheesecloth cool a little bit, and wring out the water. The cheesecloth will only feel damp


  3. Place kitchen strainer or colander onto a basin, then lay the cheese cloth on the top of the strainer

  5. Pour in homemade plain yogurt

  7. Then fold the cheesecloth like pictures show below

  9. Make a bigger water bag and tied them.

  11. Place water bags on the top of yogurt filter

  13. Then move it into the refrigerator

  15. Check back every hour or two to pour out the whey into another container, this will keep filter's bottom not going to touch the liquid

  17. The straining time for reference:


    • Thicker yogurt - the thickness is between regular plain yogurt and Greek yogurt, is about 1-2 hours


    • Greek yogurt - about 3-4 hours


    • Yogurt cheese - about 8 hours, or over night


  18. The pictures show about 8 hours strained yogurt, it become yogurt cheese

  20. Move the strained yogurt into a container and fully stir it until creamy

  21. (You can add some whey back to the stained yogurt if it is too dry)


  22. Tied the lid onto the container and keep it into refrigerator

Yogurt cheese will taste sour because the whey took away lactose. You can use it as sour cream, make salad dressings, dips, spread and more.
